Selecting your wedding cake is one of the best parts of the planning process! It's fun, you get to eat a bunch of cake and then see it all come to life. We had so much fun picking our cake and wanted to share some some tips that will help you make the most out of yours. Now let's get tasting!

1. Start with research

Instagram and Pinterest are your best friends for inspiration and getting a sense of what you want your cake to look like.

We searched for the perfect cake and it was Michelle Spagnoli from Cake Creations by Michelle, that sealed the deal for us.

2. Attend wedding shows

Nothing replaces meeting someone in person. Wedding shows are a great opportunity to meet cake designers and feel out what they are all about. You want to make sure you "click" with them and they will be someone that can make your vision a reality.

When we first met Michelle we instantly clicked with her personality and the cakes she had on display were stunning. Michelle really simplified the process and put us at ease and that is exactly what you want in a designer. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Michelle as she is one of the most talented cake creators we have ever seen.

3. Know your budget

Get real with how much you are will and able to spend on your cake. Cakes can range anywhere from $500 to $5,000. Majority of your wedding cake probably won't get eaten so consider a smaller cake with a more intricate design. Communicate your budget from the get go to make the process as efficient as possible.

4. Don't eat the entire slice at the tasting, there is more...

Depending on your initial suggestions to types of cake you like, your designer will have 4-6 cake options for you to try. My advice to you would be eat just enough of your sample piece to experience the fullness and flavour. But do not eat the whole piece because it will to tough to eat six pieces.

5. Be open to input

The expert is the expert. They have had much experience with cakes and can offer some sound recommendations on size, style, taste, and many other things that can help you avoid any problems on your big day.

BONUS TIPS:

  1. Know where the cake is going to be set up & have it ready for the cake person before they arrive.

  2. Know if your designer require floral the day of and if so, who will be providing it?

  3. Are there any dietary restrictions to be aware of from guests?

  4. If you have a special platter from your designer, who is collecting it afterward?

We were so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Cakes Creations by Michelle, take a look at the incredible work she did for our wedding cake. Check out our boho barn style cake she did for us!!
